Castello di Neive Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano 2021
Santo Stefano is one of the most celebrated single vineyards in all of Barbaresco — recognised as a distinct site for almost 300 years, occupying a privileged south-to-southwest exposure in the heart of the Albesani hill in Neive, cooled by the nearby Tanaro river. Castello di Neive has owned the vineyard's parcels since 1964, and for decades supplied fruit under long-term contract to the legendary Bruno Giacosa, whose red-label Santo Stefano Riserva remains one of the most age-worthy Barbarescos ever made, with bottles from the 1960s and 70s still drinking beautifully today. Castello di Neive has always bottled its own version alongside those contracted sales — the estate's flagship wine, and arguably the truest expression of the site under a single, unbroken hand. Made from 100% Nebbiolo off vines now averaging around 50 years old, the wine is fermented in stainless steel with careful temperature control and automatic pump-overs over twelve to fourteen days, then aged twelve to eighteen months in French oak — a classical, patient approach befitting one of the region's most storied terroirs.
The result shows exactly why Santo Stefano commands such reverence: deep garnet in colour, with intoxicating aromas of purple fruit and wild flowers underscored by cherry, rose, and baking spice, building with age into dried rose, liquorice, tar, and autumnal undergrowth. The palate is powerful yet refined, with firm tannins, bright acidity, and a long, spicy finish — critics have repeatedly praised its "generous, enveloping fruit" and genuine sense of place, calling it a wine that "perfectly conveys the spirit and essence" of Barbaresco itself.
