Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 2012

The 2012 vintage in Margaret River was characterised by a cool, protracted growing season that extended ripening and built natural acidity into the fruit, producing a wine of exceptional structure and tension from the outset — the kind of vintage that rewards those who can resist opening it young. Whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented in French oak with partial malolactic fermentation and extended lees contact, the 2012 has had well over a decade in bottle to evolve into something of profound complexity, and it shows.

Deep golden in the glass with rich amber highlights, the nose is at once opulent and structured — toasted brioche, roasted hazelnuts and crème brûlée alongside preserved lemon, dried apricot, white truffle and a compelling thread of smoky flint minerality that speaks unmistakably to the Wilyabrup terroir. The palate is full and generous yet remains impeccably focused: layers of stone fruit conserve and citrus peel, creamy lees texture now seamlessly integrated, cedar and spice from the oak long since absorbed into the fabric of the wine, finishing with the kind of length and persistence that only the finest Chardonnays — from anywhere — sustain at this age.
