Frank Cornelissen MunJebel CS 2021
The MunJebel CS is classified as a Grand Cru by Cornelissen himself, sitting alongside Magma, the SC (Scimonetta), and the VA (Vigne Alte) at the very top of his hierarchy. This distinguishes it clearly from the CR and PA, which are Premier Crus.
The Contrada: Chiusa Spagnolo
The CS comes from Cornelissen's fully ungrafted vineyard in contrada Zottorinoto, specifically in the section called Chiusa Spagnolo — situated towards the valley floor, partly hidden in a natural amphitheatre surrounded by lava. Planted around 1925 and sitting at a lower altitude of 620 metres above sea level, it produces a profound, tannic wine that is somewhat backward and Nebbiolo-like compared to his other contrada wines.
The 2021 CS is described as wild and mysterious. It opens with compelling aromas of violet, rose, forest berry, wet stone and dark spice. Delicious and beautifully balanced, the intense palate shows finesse and structure, delivering layers of red fruit, citrus, dark culinary spice and tangy mineral notes that linger on the finish. Firm, refined tannins and bright acidity provide the framework, while mineral tension gives it an edge.
