Domaine Gramenon La Papesse 2019
La Papesse is reserved for Domaine Gramenon's very best vintages — in lesser years, this fruit is simply folded into the more approachable La Sagesse instead. It comes from old Grenache vines, 60 to 80 years old, planted in the 1930s high on a rocky plateau in the northern hillsides of Vinsobres, where the terrain is scattered with white galet stones remarkably similar to those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, over clay-limestone and sandy soils at 350–400 metres. Michèle Aubéry-Laurent farms it, like everything at Gramenon, biodynamically, and from 2020 has blended in a small 10% of Syrah — by her own description, "to bring a bit of finesse, to calm the Grenache that can be a bit violent" at such high natural alcohol. The fruit is partially destemmed and given a fifteen-day maceration in open wood or concrete vats with daily pump-overs, fermented on indigenous yeasts, and aged twelve months split mostly between old oak casks and a portion of clay jars, with only the lightest dusting of sulphur after malolactic. The estate itself recommends waiting at least three years after bottling before opening it, and decanting when you do.
The result shows real depth and generosity: a pure, perfumed, elegant nose of red fruit gives way to a concentrated, gourmand palate — sweet, spiced, and possessed of a distinctly sunny warmth that gives it real indulgence, all balanced by imposing, structured tannins. Reviewers have repeatedly called it a beautiful vin de garde, capable of holding for ten to fifteen years in good cellar conditions, with a bottle described as "a fruit bomb supported by an imposing tannic structure" — a Côtes du Rhône that outclasses the standards of its own appellation.
