Bernhard Huber Hecklinger Schlossberg Spatburgunder Grosses Gewachs 2013

Regular price $370.00

Weingut Bernhard Huber Hecklinger Schlossberg Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs is an absolute titan of German Pinot Noir, hailed globally as a Grand Cru equivalent that easily goes toe-to-toe with Burgundy’s finest. Sourced from the historic, steeply terraced Schlossberg vineyard in Baden's Breisgau district, these French-clone vines cling to vertical slopes composed of pure, weathered white limestone. Following the pioneering legacy of the late Bernhard Huber, his son Julian masterfully guides the fruit through traditional open-top wooden fermenters with a portion of whole clusters, followed by an extended maturation in tightly grained French oak barriques. The unique, highly concentrated microclimate of the south-facing Schlossberg yields a Pinot of profound structural power, deep complexity, and a chiseled limestone skeleton that sets it apart from all other German reds.

In the glass, it reveals a dark, translucent ruby-crimson hue and immediately shifts shapes on the nose, throwing an intense, ethereal bouquet of sour cherries, wild forest strawberries, and dark plums balanced by smoky cedar, violets, and cracked black pepper. On the palate, it hits like a wave of pure alpine freshness, offering immense concentration without ever feeling heavy or over-extracted. Silky, ultra-fine tannins that feel like heavy velvet wrap around a deeply savory mid-palate of dark berry fruit, anise, and a distinct touch of bitter cocoa. The real showstopper is its vibrating, razor-sharp line of cool white chalky minerality, leading into an interminable, smoky finish that balances immense power with feminine grace.
