Jean Foillard Morgon Eponym' 2018
Eponym is the youngest member of Jean Foillard's celebrated trinity of Morgon single-site cuvées — and the most quietly cerebral. It debuted in 2013, sourced from a tiny parcel in Les Charmes, and completes Foillard's mastery of the terroir alongside the more established Côte du Py and Corcelette. The same uncompromising approach applies throughout the range: old vines, no synthetic herbicides or pesticides, late harvest with rigorous sorting, minimal or no added sulphur, no chaptalization and no filtration — the wine raised in older barrels sourced from top Burgundy estates, a fitting choice for a Gamay made so deliberately in a Burgundian register.
If Côte du Py is rich and wild-cherry-accented and Corcelette has a silky delicacy, Eponym is intricate, darker-fruited and tense — all the Foillard wines share an amazing textural intrigue, but here the minerality is profoundly tactile, an energetic mineral streak running through nuanced floral notes. Red-fruited with notes of raspberry, nutmeg, citrus rind and dried tea — medium-minus body, dry, with real grip and length.
