Domaine Belargus Anjou Roueres 2020

Regular price $249.00

Domaine Belargus Anjou Blanc 'Les Rouères' is a profound, deeply complex dry Chenin Blanc that masterfully showcases the solar power of one of the historic plots within the Quarts-de-Chaume grand cru hillside. While historically famous for producing legendary sweet botrytized wines, proprietor Ivan Massonnat isolates this 2.96-hectare single-plot to vinify it completely bone-dry. The eastern-facing vineyard features a highly unique geological profile: very thin, warm topsoils sitting over a solid bedrock of puddingstone (conglomerate rocks composed of ancient sand concretions and rolled river gravels). This specific terroir functions as a natural heat radiator, absorbing solar warmth during the day and radiating it back to the low-yielding, biodynamically farmed vines at night. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous wild yeasts in seasoned French oak barrels, the wine undergoes an extended aging period on its fine lees, yielding a texturally opulent, baroque-style dry Anjou of immense depth and structural poise.

In the glass, it pours an intense, luminous straw-yellow with bright golden reflections. The bouquet is highly complex and broad, moving away from simple fresh orchard fruits to reveal a rich tapestry of warm baked dates, preserved lemon, and yellow quince, intricately layered with aromas of honey, warm curry spices, anise, and a distinct, smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in structural contrast. The entry is uncommonly large, round, and fleshy—coating the mouth with a generous, silky-textured wave of ripe pit fruits—before being immediately reined in by a powerful spine of heroic natural acidity. What truly defines 'Les Rouères' on the palate is its exceptional, phenonlic-driven framework, which introduces a noble, complex bitterness and a massive wave of piquant, tequila-like salinity toward the back of the mouth. It finishes incredibly long, dry, and tight, leaving a persistent trail of candied citrus pith, crushed stones, and a firm, mineral-infused grip.
