Domaine Belargus Anjou Noir 2020
Domaine Belargus Anjou 'Anjou Noir' is a brilliant, highly energetic entry point into the revolutionary world of Ivan Massonnat’s biodynamic estate, acting as a definitive calling card for the property's dry Chenin Blanc philosophy. The name pays homage to "Black Anjou," a geological region defined by its dark, ancient volcanic bedrock and schist, which stands in stark contrast to the white limestone soils of neighboring Saumur. This cuvée is a thoughtful blend sourced from several organically and biodynamically farmed parcels spread across the estate's holdings, including sites along the Layon Valley. Winemaking follows the estate's signature blueprint of natural minimalism: a slow, spontaneous fermentation driven entirely by indigenous wild yeasts in a combination of stainless steel vats and seasoned French oak barrels. By focusing on a blend of terroirs rather than a single plot, Belargus captures a beautifully balanced, incredibly pure snapshot of the entire region’s mineral-driven identity.
In the glass, it shows a bright, pale-straw gold color with youthful green reflections. The nose is instantly expressive and chiseled, unlocking a vibrant bouquet of fresh green apples, lemon zest, and white peach, beautifully overlaid with complex varietal signatures of chamomile, wet stones, and a touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine delivers an exhilarating sense of freshness and drive, perfectly marrying texturing with vertical tension. A concentrated core of crunchy orchard fruit and citrus pith is tightly wrapped around a razor-sharp, mouth-watering spine of natural acidity. The distinct black schist soils make their presence felt through a deeply tactile, chalky mid-palate texture and a persistent wave of salty minerality that fans out across the back of the mouth. It finishes completely bone-dry, exceptionally clean, and refreshing, leaving behind a lingering trail of lime rind and crushed slate.
