Chateau de Bonnezeaux Les Coqueries 2021
Château de Bonnezeaux 'Les Coqueries' is a spectacular, deeply intellectual expression of dry Chenin Blanc that stands as a definitive jewel in the crown of this revitalized Loire Valley estate. Sourced from a prized, minuscule single vineyard planted on a gentle slope, the site is characterized by an ultra-specific, ancient soil composition of purple schist, quartz, and heavy puddled clay. Under the visionary, biodynamic guidance of winemaker Guyonne Sacney, the old vines are tended with meticulous care to encourage deep root penetration into the bedrock. In the cellar, the fruit is treated with standard-setting natural minimalism: a slow, spontaneous fermentation driven by indigenous yeasts in old French oak barrels, followed by an extended aging period on its total fine lees. Bottled completely unfined, unfiltered, and with absolutely zero added sulfur, 'Les Coqueries' is a pure, unmanipulated monument of texture and terroir.
In the glass, it pours a rich, shimmering golden-straw color, unleashing a deeply complex, boundary-pushing bouquet of baked yellow pears, dried quince, and candied citrus peel, beautifully laced with notes of wet wool, honeycomb, and a striking, smoky flint reduction. On the palate, it delivers a masterclass in concentration and structural contrast. The entry is broad, fleshy, and luxuriously textural—coating the mouth with a rich wave of savory orchard fruit and beeswax—before being instantly chiseled wide open by a razor-sharp, electric spine of typical Chenin acidity. The unique purple schist soils impart a profound, deeply tactile mineral weight and a distinct saline-driven tension that makes the palate water. It finishes completely bone-dry and endlessly long, leaving behind a haunting trail of smoky minerals, lemon pith, and sea salt.
