Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Blanc 2018 1.5L
Benjamin Leroux is one of the more quietly extraordinary success stories of modern Burgundy. A former régisseur at the celebrated Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard, he struck out on his own in 2007 to build a micro-négociant based in Beaune, working out of a shared cellar with Dominique Lafon. Unlike conventional négociants, Leroux never buys finished juice — he manages the vines himself or works directly with growers under long-term contracts, often paying by the plot rather than by tonnage to keep full control over ripeness, yields, and farming, with organic or biodynamic practices a non-negotiable clause for every grower he works with. This Bourgogne Blanc is sourced primarily from Meursault, with a portion from neighbouring Puligny-Montrachet, drawn from vines that in some parcels date back to the 1930s — genuinely exceptional pedigree hiding beneath the region's most basic appellation. It's aged mostly in neutral oak, with new wood kept deliberately restrained, letting the fruit and terroir carry the wine rather than winemaking technique.
The result behaves far more like a village wine than a simple Bourgogne: white peach, Meyer lemon, and crushed stone on the nose, opening onto a palate that balances ripe orchard fruit with zesty, lifted acidity and a faint, mineral-tinged thread of oak. It's sleek, textural, and precise, with a lifted finish that captures both the clarity of the vintage and Leroux's characteristically light, transparent hand.
