Arnaud Lambert Saumur Breze Clos du Chateau 2020
Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé 'Clos du Château' is a spectacular showcase of Chenin Blanc grown directly within the historic, estate-leased parcels surrounding the 11th-century Château de Brézé in the Loire Valley. Revered for centuries and historically traded barrel-for-barrel with Château d'Yquem, this legendary terroir is defined by its famous tuffeau limestone and sandy-silt soils. Standard-bearer Arnaud Lambert coaxes the absolute best out of these old grounds through meticulous organic and biodynamic farming. The fruit undergoes spontaneous native yeast fermentation before a long, quiet maturation on its total fine lees, yielding a stunningly pure, stripped-down, and elemental white wine that plugs directly into the raw limestone electricity of the hill.
In the glass, it shows a pale, brilliant straw-gold, opening with a chiseled nose of wet stone, oyster shell, and white grapefruit that gently softens into crunchy green pear and fresh white flowers. On the palate, it strikes a breathtaking balance between laser-sharp tension and an unexpected, silken density. An initial wave of mouth-watering, citrus-driven acidity drives across the tongue, beautifully balanced by a chalky texture and a bone-dry finish. It concludes with an incredibly long, thirst-quenching wave of smoky minerality and a clean, saline-infused grip.
