Felton Road Pinot Noir Calvert 2020

Regular price $124.00

Calvert is one of the most storied single vineyards in all of Central Otago — a site so exceptional that for years, its fruit was split between three different producers, each making their own expression from the same ground. Felton Road began leasing the vineyard in 2001, sharing it with Craggy Range and Pyramid Valley, who each took their own portion to produce distinct interpretations of the exact same site — a rare, genuinely fascinating opportunity to compare winemaking philosophy against a fixed terroir. In 2013, when the vineyard came up for sale, Felton Road finally purchased the Willows, Springs, and Aurum blocks (4.6 hectares) outright, planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Sitting just two kilometres east of the original Elms vineyard, below the historic Bannockburn Gold Sluicings, the site's deep silt soils with a thin loess topsoil give the wine its signature polished texture. Blair Walter has made Calvert since the very first vintage in 2006, making him the winemaker with the longest unbroken relationship to the site — farmed, like the rest of the estate, under full Demeter biodynamic and organic certification.

The result is consistently described as the most floral and finely chiselled of Felton Road's single-vineyard Pinots: violets and dark rose petal dominate the nose, with Felton Road's own notes wryly observing that "Calvertness is rarely, if ever, outclassed," even in warmer, riper vintages
