Domaine Francois Mikulski Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu 2021

Regular price $247.00

Santenots-du-Milieu is one of Volnay's most compelling geographical paradoxes — a premier cru that lies physically within the commune of Meursault yet carries the Volnay appellation, its red wine roots running through the same soils that produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay only metres away. Mikulski's holding is 0.90 hectares of organically farmed vines planted in 1947 and 1976, grown on brown silt over fractured bedrock with excellent water retention — a terroir that gives the wine uncommon depth and structure for Volnay. Harvested by hand and fermented with ambient yeasts, the wine spends 14 months in barrel with around 35% new oak — restrained enough to let the terroir speak, generous enough to give the structure the wine demands — before being racked to tank for further ageing prior to bottling.

A light garnet in the glass, the nose reveals its depth only with patience — blueberry jam, morello cherry, cherry stone and prune developing on aeration, with peonies emerging and a subtle metallic minerality between pencil lead and steel. On the palate, raspberry liqueur and cherry jam build toward coarsely ground black pepper, bark and ashes, with the fruit growing progressively more spiced and complex with air — blueberry, blackcurrant and candied cherry, with traces of orange and pomegranate on a focused, tense and precise finish. One description captures it well — floral, ethereal, and graceful, a white wine drinker's red.
