Fabien Duveau Saumur Blanc Les Poyeux 2022

Regular price $88.00

Les Poyeux carries genuine legendary status in the Loire — before the mythical Clos Rougeard acquired its own celebrated Chenin parcel on the hill of Brézé, it was this very vineyard that produced that iconic domaine's white wine. Today Les Poyeux is planted almost entirely to Cabernet Franc, but Fabien Duveau's mother's family still holds onto a tiny 0.08-hectare sliver of old Chenin vines here, and as far as anyone can tell, Fabien — an eighth-generation winegrower based in Chacé — is the only person left making a single-parcel bottling from it. It's a vanishingly small production: just 10 to 12 barrels, around 6,000 bottles a year, from vines rooted in the site's famous sandy clay over limestone. Fabien farms organically (Demeter-certified biodynamic since 2023) with genuinely regenerative practices — beehives among the vines, sheep for eco-grazing, wild strawberries and cover crops left to grow alongside the Chenin — and ages the wine in his family's fourteenth-century cellar, entirely in neutral French oak on its lees for twelve months.

The result captures that legendary limestone signature with real delicacy: fresh white flower and citrus aromatics lead into a palate built on green apple and gentle floral lift, the old oak lending a rich, building texture without ever tipping into heaviness. It finishes with impressive intensity and length, balanced and refreshing rather than heavy-handed.
