If Clos David is Brézé's power and structure, Clos de la Rue is its finesse. This historic walled monopole — just over a hectare, farmed and vinified exclusively by Arnaud Lambert — sits on the warmest, most sheltered pocket of the Brézé hill, insulated from the gusting winds that circle the site elsewhere. Old vines, some planted as far back as the 1960s and 70s, are rooted in a distinctive profile of sandy topsoil over clay, sitting atop the same tuffeau and Turonian limestone bedrock that defines the whole appellation. Lambert vinifies it with the same restrained, parcel-by-parcel philosophy he applies across his range — natural, low-intervention winemaking with an increasing share of oak as the wines gain in density, this being one of his flagship Clos bottlings, typically aged around two years in a mix of new and lightly used barriques.

The result is a Chenin of real precision rather than raw power: ripe, almost tropical fruit intertwines with green apple and chalky citrus, lifted by yeasty, discreetly oaked complexity. The palate is full yet finessed — dense and juicy, but carried by persistent, salty minerality and a long, tensioned finish that critics have repeatedly likened to a young, steely Chablis. Where sibling cuvée Clos David can be more brooding and slow to open, Clos de la Rue shows a brighter, more filigreed character, delicate and frisky even as it holds real ageing potential. Give it air, then pour it with roast pork, a rich seafood tajine, or aged Comté — this is one of the most quietly thrilling expressions of Chenin Blanc coming out of the Loire today.
