Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut NV

Regular price $295.00

Egly-Ouriet is widely considered one of the forerunners of the entire grower-Champagne movement — a family estate founded in 1930 in Ambonnay, one of the Montagne de Reims's most prestigious Grand Cru villages, that was transformed into a genuine cult address when fourth-generation Francis Egly took the reins in the 1980s. His seventeen hectares, farmed organically and biodynamically, sit almost entirely across Grand Cru terroir — Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Verzenay — with vines averaging around forty years old, planted on the region's famous chalk and limestone soils. This Grand Cru Brut (long known as "Brut Tradition," now also labelled Extra Brut as dosage has crept down over the years) is the estate's calling card: roughly 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, about 70% sourced from Ambonnay itself with the balance from Bouzy, Verzenay, and Verzy. Every drop is wild-fermented and aged in older oak barrels and casks with no malolactic fermentation, then rests a full four years on its lees before disgorgement, bottled unfined and unfiltered with only the barest dosage.

The result is exactly what's made Egly-Ouriet a benchmark: deep black and red cherry fruit, dried flowers, mint, and spice meet toast, nuts, and a subtle charcuterie nuance from the barrel ageing, all carried by chalky minerality and vibrant, driving acidity through a long, complex finish. It's Pinot-driven and powerful, yet remarkably precise — critics have repeatedly called it "complete, complex and effortless," a Champagne that behaves more like a serious still wine than a simple aperitif fizz.
