Jean-Marc Millot Bourgogne 2021
Domaine Jean-Marc Millot is a quiet Vosne-Romanée gem — a domaine whose holdings stretch up into some of the most coveted grand cru terroir in Burgundy, yet whose entry-level Bourgogne consistently overdelivers with the same hedonistic, pure-pinot character that defines the entire range. Alix Millot, who has taken over winemaking from her father, has improved quality significantly in recent years, adding precision and depth without losing the wines' hedonistic qualities — while perhaps not direct competitors to Cathiard or Comte Liger-Belair, the Millot wines possess a lovely joie de vivre and beautiful energy that make them notable challengers, and crucially, far more accessible on price. The Bourgogne Rouge draws on the same meticulous, terroir-focused winemaking applied to the domaine's grand crus — the wines mostly kept on the cool side, with a fine freshness and expression of terroir, detailed and transparent.
The 2021 vintage, a cooler and more classically structured year across Burgundy, suits the Millot style particularly well. Fresh, relatively vivid and openly knit, with good, cool energy and tension — clear minerality, with red and dark fruits playfully interacting. Pure and quite detailed red berry fruit on the nose, transparent with fresh berry notes; on the palate fine, juicy fruit, lightfooted and airy with a lovely vibrant mid-palate — a true Bourgogne Rouge.
