Jean-Jacques Confuron Nuits St. Georges Les Fleurieres 2019
Les Fleurières is a village-level lieu-dit that sits in a particularly fortunate position — directly below the celebrated premier cru Les Pruliers, lending the wine a touch more seriousness than its appellation status might suggest. The parcel sits right below the Nuits premier cru Les Pruliers, and the wine is 100% Pinot Noir from the Les Fleurières lieu-dit of the Nuits-Saint-Georges village. The grapes are completely destemmed and placed in cement tanks for cold maceration, the must fermenting under controlled temperatures with CO2 retention to preserve the full character of the variety, before resting on lees and being transferred to barrel to age for 15 to 18 months depending on the vintage, then bottled without clarifying or filtering and with minimal added sulphur. The soils in the Côte de Nuits here are formed of calcareous scree, limestone and red silt, with a diversity of terroir contributing to the typicality of the region's wines.
Delicate on the nose with aromas of raspberry and licorice — a fresh and fruity attack where everything is in the right place, fruit notes, tannins and acidity, finishing elegant and refined. The nose is moderately reduced so thorough aeration is beneficial; the supple, round and utterly delicious flavours are not quite as dense as the domaine's premier crus, while the lingering finish is rustic and borderline chewy — at least some patience is advised. Fragrant lavender, raspberries, dried herbs and a touch of orange peel on the nose — focused on the palate, compact, with a medium body and firm finish.
