Jean-Jacques Confuron Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2019
Les Chaboeufs sits at the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges — a position that lends the wine a particular structure and seriousness within the Confuron range. Les Chaboeufs is at the southern end of NSG, and the grapes come from a small vineyard of barely half a hectare with stony and limestone soils — clusters are selected before destemming, given a four-to-six-day pre-fermentation maceration to extract colour and velvety tannins, fermentation lasting around twelve days at 30°C with three cap plunges daily, then aged in oak barrels of which 70% are new, bottled without fining or filtering and with only minimal added sulphites. The domaine's holdings trace back to the 1926 marriage of Jean Confuron de Vosne and Anne-Marie Bouchard de Premeaux, with the parcels here farmed with the same organic discipline applied across the estate.
Liqueur-like aromas of ripe dark currant are trimmed in hints of earth, pepper and crushed fennel, with excellent volume and richness to the full-bodied, muscular flavours that exhibit impressive power on a complex, mildly rustic and persistent finish — very Nuits in style, and patience will absolutely be necessary. Dense dark purple, with powerful plums and a graphite note, significant density, the fruit swelling right across the palate in huge volume yet perfectly judged ripeness, with an excellent length. Aromas of red cherry on a floral, softly spicy nose, with hints of minerals, earth and leather that will develop over time — medium-bodied with soft tannin and an elegant finish.
