Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 2019
The premier cru rises to a different register than the village wine — and the source explains why. This wine is sourced from two premier cru vineyards, Les Chatelots and Les Feusselottes, from vines of 45 to 65 years of age, aged in barrel for 15 to 18 months with 50% new oak. The vineyards come from Sophie's side of the family, once part of the Charles Noëllat domaine — and with the sale of part of that estate to Leroy and the splitting off of various pieces, the Confuron, Leroy and Hudelot-Noëllat parcels can now be seen side by side in several appellations, each farmed differently: Confuron organically, Leroy biodynamically. Made mostly from Chatelots with a touch of Feusselottes, the wine takes on a firmer style of Chambolle as Chatelots dominates — fresh mid-purple in colour, with excellent intensity behind a nose that doesn't leap out immediately.
Often described as Confuron's most feminine red Burgundy, the bouquet is ripe in red and black fruit met by floral notes typical of the appellation, the wine balanced by pleasing acidity and a lovely finish. A super elegant nose, ultra-pure essence of red berries, violet, plum, spice and floral nuances — excellent volume and serious punch, with a caressing mouthfeel on the lightly mineral-inflected finish. Silky, concentrated red fruit and luxurious oak, mid-weight but with higher acidity that provides freshness — delicious already, but certain to be even better in five to ten years. A wine that embodies power without weight, with great depth of flavour wrapped in refinement and elegance — the Confuron house signature expressed at its most complete and most rewarding level.
