Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvee Corcelette 2022
Where the Côte du Py is Foillard's flagship statement of Morgon's volcanic depth and structure, the Cuvée Corcelette is its more immediately seductive counterpart — a wine that reveals a different and in some ways more immediately accessible dimension of what this remarkable appellation can do. Foillard's holding in the Corcelette climat includes vines over 80 years of age, grown on sandy granite and schist soils — a single climat considered by many to be grand cru Beaujolais, where the granitic and schisty soils consistently lead to wines with richer, darker fruit notes and have proven to raise some of the very best expressions of Gamay. The same méthode ancienne applies: organic farming without certification, whole-cluster fermentation, no chaptalization, indigenous yeasts, no filtration, aged in old Burgundian barrels sourced from top estates in the Côte d'Or.
Corcelette stands apart for its floral raciness, courtesy of its sandstone soil, contrasting beautifully with Côte du Py's meaty depth and richness. On the nose, sensational notes of macerated raspberries, red flowers, chanterelles, granitic earth and minerals — on the palate dry with medium tannin and vibrant acidity, the finish medium-plus and so easy to love, super balanced. Silky and seductive, with notes of rose petals, red berries and stones — the wine that perhaps most perfectly captures Foillard's gift for making Gamay feel simultaneously effortless and profound.
