Domaine Odoul-Coquard Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 2020

Aux Combottes occupies one of the most intriguing positions in all of Gevrey-Chambertin — a premier cru that runs along the boundary with Morey-Saint-Denis, sandwiched between the grand crus Latricières-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche. It is a transitional terroir in the most compelling sense: on one side the power and spice of Gevrey, on the other the finesse and perfume of Morey, and the wine consistently sits somewhere between both. Sébastien Odoul's assessment of it is unambiguous — he considers Aux Combottes his third grand cru, alongside Charmes-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot. The blend draws from different parcels with vines ranging from 15 to 80 years old, giving the wine a complexity and layering that reflects its diverse source material, and it sees more new oak than the village wines — appropriate for a premier cru of this ambition. 

Beautiful violet flowers and dark cherries with some sous-bois, leading to a very balanced palate with good depth and power — a great site. Wonderful depth and concentration — the succulent cherry and berry fruit remains juicy with warm notes of spice, and wonderfully fine, rounded tannins bring extra depth and length. Plenty of weight, depth and concentration with a dark note to the fruit — sweet-fruited with rounded tannins present to give backbone and longevity, and a note of warm orange rind on the finish.
