Domaine Odoul-Coquard Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes 2020
Domaine Odoul-Coquard is based in Morey-Saint-Denis but its most celebrated wine comes from just across the communal boundary in Chambolle-Musigny — a four-generation family estate run by Sébastien Odoul, quietly producing some of the Côte de Nuits's most compelling terroir-driven wines from a total production of around 31,000 bottles. Les Baudes sits directly beneath the grand cru Bonnes Mares vineyard near the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, on light, stony marl soils with lots of limestone at 250 to 300 metres altitude, with an east-facing exposure and vines planted in 1960. The wine is matured for 15 months in two-thirds new oak — a proportion that gives structure and depth without overwhelming the delicate Chambolle character — with a maximum of three barrels produced each vintage. Sébastien notes that the vines produce almost exclusively tiny millerandé grapes, a natural concentration that results in wines of uncommon intensity for their size.
Gorgeous, deep floral yet vibrantly elegant Chambolle — fine texture that starts with silk before the tannin adds a little velvet, with wide, fresh dark fruit and a mouth-watering finish still full of dark fruit. Simply splendid and not to miss. Lovely rich red fruit, an elegant character and a long finish — rich and pretty raspberry and cherry notes that can only be Chambolle. Red fruits, violet and a touch of sous-bois on the nose; on the palate a harmony of freshness, finesse and persistent length — a wine that earns its proximity to Bonnes Mares without needing to announce it.
