Domaine Mee Godard Morgon Cote du Py 2020
The Côte du Py is the most celebrated and demanding terroir in Morgon — an extinct volcanic hill whose soils of schist and blue volcanic stone, the famous pierres bleues, produce wines of a depth and structure that regularly invite comparison with Burgundy's finest. For Mee Godard, it is the wine that most completely expresses her vision of Gamay as a grape worthy of serious cellaring. The parcels sit on pierres bleues — a mix of schist and blue volcanic stone of andesitic granite — which bring depth, structure and mineral intensity; the vines 75 to 79 years old, trained en gobelet, farmed at high density with south-east exposure. Aged 11 months in barrels and demi-muids followed by three months in tank — a refined élevage that allows Mee's precise style to take full flight. Yields are low and around 60 to 70% of the bunch is used, with maceration of three weeks to infuse all the attributes from the top class pedigree of the terroir — wines that deserve decanting for at least 35 minutes and several years in the cellar.
A powerful aromatic profile marked by notes of blackcurrant, liquorice, graphite and black pepper, delivered with elegance — the palate offering naturally fleshy fruit well wrapped in a generous and slender texture, with an obvious capacity to age. The bouquet blooms beautifully with air — violet, rose hip, wet granite and a soft background of blue fruit; restrained, medium-plus acidity paired with a nice, velvety structure — elegant and graceful, one of very few cru Beaujolais that actually delivers on the Burgundian promise. The fruit expresses blackcurrant and blackberry with a graphite imprint that tightens it — this is Gamay at its most serious and most compelling, from a producer the Revue du Vin de France named star of the year.
