Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee Alexandrine 2021
Domaine Marc Roy is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most compelling small estates — a four-hectare property managed by Alexandrine Roy, fourth generation of her family, whose meticulous approach to viticulture has attracted admirers well beyond the village's more celebrated names. Alexandrine is a true farmer, consistently ploughing the soils of her old-vine vineyards — many of which are more than 100 years old — to allow roots to dig deep into the shallow limestone, with minimal intervention and extraction allowing her old vines to express themselves with immense depth of flavour and clarity. The Cuvée Alexandrine is the domaine's prestige village selection, produced only in the best vintages from the oldest parcels — a selection of millerandage berries from the best plots, resulting in wines of exceptional concentration and intensity. Grapes are 100% destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in French oak with 30% new barrels for 16 to 18 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
The bouquet bursts with red berry fruit — characteristic notes of pomegranate spiced with a fine earthy minerality and violets — quite floral and expressive for a Gevrey, with lovely juicy and energetic fruit on the palate, fine weight and a sweet core of fruit focused by a vibrant acidity. Airy and cool aromas of red and dark raspberry with undertones of spice, floral, humus and earth; the super-sleek, intense and strikingly well-delineated flavours possessing evident mid-palate concentration alongside striking minerality on the impeccably well-balanced finish. Amazing for a village-level wine — one of the best red Burgundies you are likely to encounter at this classification, hitting well above the quality level you would expect.
