Domaine Laurent Roumier Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits 2020
Domaine Laurent Roumier is a name that carries quiet but serious weight in Chambolle-Musigny — Laurent's father Alain spent years as régisseur at the legendary Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, and the culture of precision and detail absorbed there runs through everything the domaine produces. Based entirely within the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, Laurent farms his vines entirely naturally without fertilisers or herbicides, harvests by hand, and ages his wines in older barrels with minimal new oak — 10% at this level — keeping the focus firmly on fruit purity and terroir expression. The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits rouge comes from vines growing at 350 metres altitude on thin, poor soils in direct contact with bare limestone bedrock — conditions that demand patience from the vine and deliver energy and brightness in return.
A 100% Pinot Noir of genuine gourmand character, generous, intense and perfumed with superb notes of red fruits — cherry, morello, redcurrant and strawberry — alongside darker cassis and blackberry; the palate enveloping with silky tannins and vivid freshness. The altitude and lean limestone terroir give this wine a lift and fragrance that the richer, lower-lying Hautes-Côtes vineyards rarely achieve — this is Chambolle-Musigny character at a fraction of the village price, and one of the more compelling arguments for looking beyond the famous labels when exploring the Côte de Nuits
