Domaine Joseph Voillot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 2021
Les Rugiens is the apex of the Voillot range — the wine that silences any lingering doubt about whether a Pommard premier cru can genuinely belong in the same conversation as the great Côte de Nuits. Voillot's parcel sits entirely in Rugiens-Bas — the lower, mid-slope section and universally acknowledged better half of the climat — on shallow soils of Bathonian limestone and Argovian marl, from vines planted in 1959. Rugiens-Bas is the grand cru that Pommard never received: an iron-rich, deeply structured terroir that produces wines of brooding complexity and extraordinary longevity, and the Voillot version — farmed with the same meticulous restraint applied across the entire domaine, vinified with indigenous yeasts, aged 16 to 18 months with around 25% new oak — captures it with a purity and precision that is genuinely thrilling.
The bouquet is a shade deeper and more complex than any of the other Pommard premier crus, wafting from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, plums, smoked meats, bonfire and a complex foundation of minerality, with a nice touch of spice and a floral top note redolent of violets — on the palate pure, full-bodied and properly structured, with a great core of fruit, fine focus, ripe tannins and a long, well-balanced and nascently complex finish. Classic aromas of wild cherry, black tea and iron-rich minerality define the house signature here — but taken to a depth and persistence that sets this apart from everything else below it in the range. Powerful and elegant, austere and rigorous at first impact, then generous and enveloping as it opens in the glass — this is a wine to cellar for a decade without guilt and revisit with reverence.
