Domaine Joseph Voillot Meursault Les Chevalieres 2022
Les Chevalières occupies a privileged position in the Meursault hierarchy — a village lieu-dit that sits immediately alongside the premier cru vineyards on the mid-slope, offering an exposure and terroir character that consistently punches above its classification. The vines are over 40 years old, grown on clay-limestone soils at mid-slope on the Chevalières climat, just beside the premier crus and benefiting from a perfect exposure. Jean-Pierre Charlot's wines are a masterclass in understatement — letting the terroir do all the talking via relatively low alcohol levels and a prudent use of oak, mostly from Damy cooperage, with the magic revealing itself only as the wines age in bottle. It is one of only two whites the domaine produces in what is overwhelmingly a red wine estate — a rarity that adds to its appeal.
A lovely freshness on the nose, lightly buttery with aromas of orange peel and lemon; the palate generous with beautiful acidity and a long, buttery finish. Decanter described it as a delicious, old-school Meursault — a generous interpretation of an often rather austere lieu-dit. This is Meursault without flourish or artifice — an honest, classical expression of the village's white wine character from a domaine whose reputation rests entirely on its refusal to be anything other than what the land provides.
