Domaine Hudelot-Baillet Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2021
The Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes sits at the heart of the Hudelot-Baillet range — the wine that most completely distils the village's character without the additional complexity that the individual premier cru parcels bring. The cuvée is assembled from six parcels spread across the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, drawing on the diversity of the village's limestone-rich soils to build a wine of genuine breadth. The wines demonstrate a level of purity that could not be mistaken for anything but Chambolle-Musigny — light limestone soils from the Chambolle valley giving way to wines of silk and lace, with extraordinary delicacy — and the old vines that define this cuvée add a depth and concentration that takes it well beyond what the village appellation typically delivers.
Lovely crisp strawberry and raspberry fruit with ripeness and vibrancy, plenty of substance — very good quality for a village wine, with the old vines clearly helping the concentration and length. The nose is powerful, with ebullient dark cherry, violet and cassis notes and a hint of melted chocolate in the background; the palate well balanced and quite intense, with sappy black cherry and boysenberry fruit carrying through to a long finish. Fragrant intense aromas of fresh red berries, strawberry, oak spices and tilled soil; the palate with fabulous concentration and depth, soft and succulent texture, bright acidity and sweet-edged smooth tannins, a juicy mid-palate lift filled with raspberry compote, and a long, integrated finish.
