Domaine Edouard Confuron Vosne-Romanee Les Hautes-Maizieres 2022
Edouard calls this wine "my grand cru" — and the address justifies the ambition. Les Hautes Maizières sits just below the premier cru Les Suchots on the slope, with stonier soil and more concentration than the mid-village parcels below — a good stepping stone between village appellation and premier cru, and more expressive than the more sheltered, delicate lieu-dits closer to the village floor. The vines sit just below Les Suchots and the grand cru Échezeaux, right beside Clos de Vougeot, with an average vine age of 60 years — company that explains the wine's ambitions entirely. Few growers bottle Les Hautes Maizières as a single-vineyard cuvée, making Edouard's commitment to it all the more telling.
The lieu-dit benefits from exceptional terroir combining brown limestone soils with fine clay — a privileged position that delivers a typically Vosnien signature: aromatic charm allied with real depth of palate. Fine mid-purple in colour, the nose has lots of energy and a classical central Vosne character — not as immediately floral as Le Pré de la Folie, but spicier, more complex, with more volume and minerality to the larger-bodied flavours, concluding in a compact, firm, and serious finish. This is the wine in the Edouard Confuron range that demands the most patience and offers the most in return — a genuine cellar candidate, and a compelling argument that the best village Burgundy can hold its own against far more celebrated names.
