Domaine Edouard Confuron Vosne-Romanee Le Pre de la Folie 2021
Within the Edouard Confuron range, Le Pré de la Folie and Les Hautes Maizières represent two very different faces of Vosne-Romanée — and Le Pré de la Folie is decidedly the more seductive of the pair. Edouard himself describes the two as contrasting: Le Pré de la Folie is charming and delicious, while Les Hautes Maizières is the more serious wine — the one he refers to as "my grand cru." That contrast is the key to understanding this wine: this is not Vosne in its austere, structured register, but Vosne at its most disarming — open, fragrant, and irresistible from a young age. Made with 100% whole cluster, which Edouard uses to full expressive effect here, it is vinified in just four and a half barrels — a reminder of just how small and precious these allocations are.
Pale ruby to crimson in colour, Le Pré de la Folie has a very sensual whole-bunch nose of crushed alpine strawberries — gorgeous and a little less classical than you might expect from Vosne, with that crushed strawberry character continuing through the palate, supported by well-integrated oak and real persistence on the finish. It is, in the best sense, a wine that does not announce itself — it simply delights. For those coming to Edouard Confuron for the first time, this is the bottle that will make you want to explore everything else he makes.
