Domaine Edouard Confuron Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees 2021
Les Seuvrées sits at the southern end of Gevrey-Chambertin, nudging toward the Morey-Saint-Denis border — and that proximity tells you something about the wine's character. Edouard's family has long understood this parcel: the soil is deep, and with old vines you get something very good and floral. Les Seuvrées is older than its neighbouring parcels and delivers smaller quantities with a lot of concentration — some say it is not the best part of Gevrey-Chambertin, but the results suggest otherwise. The parcel sits immediately beneath the grand cru Mazoyères-Chambertin, and the wine displays a classic Gevrey meatiness alongside real structural seriousness. Edouard vinifies with whole clusters and minimal intervention, using modest new oak to let the terroir speak without amplification.
What comes through in the glass is a Gevrey of uncommon finesse for a village wine. An attractively perfumed bouquet leads to refined and discreet flavours with very good length and silky tannins — a light-touch approach to Gevrey-Chambertin that reflects Edouard's hand rather than the appellation's more brawny reputation. Classic Gevrey flavours of dark fruit, licorice, violets and spice are present, but carried on an underlying earthiness and depth that fifty-year-old vines bring to what is, technically, a village-level bottling. It is one of the more quietly impressive wines in the range — and one that rewards time in the glass.
