Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Petits Monts 2021

Located in the elite heart of the Côte de Nuits, 'Les Petits Monts' is a highly coveted, steep Premier Cru climat situated directly above the legendary Grand Crus of Richebourg and La Romanée, hugging the upper shoulder of the slope. Berthaut manages a tiny, prized 0.48-hectare parcel of historic vines planted across several eras (spanning 1934 to 2008). Due to the vineyard's sharp, steep inclination, any form of mechanization is physically impossible, requiring intensive, meticulous hand-farming. The terroir is characterized by a thin layer of clay-loam-sandy topsoil sitting directly on a hard, fractured limestone substrate. Amélie approaches this fruit with exquisite restraint: incorporating around 20% to 30% whole bunches for aromatic lift, conducting a cool pre-fermentation maceration in stainless steel vats, and aging the wine for 15 months in French oak barrels (30% new) to craft a Pinot Noir defined by its weightless verticality and profound, aristocratic elegance.

In the glass, it pours a beautiful, luminous translucent ruby red with soft pinkish-violet hues at the edge. The nose is incredibly ethereal, sophisticated, and fragrant, unravelling a masterclass bouquet of wild strawberries, red currants, and red cherries, seamlessly intertwined with complex nuances of dried lavender, rose petals, exotic spices, and a faint hint of woodsmoke. On the palate, the wine delivers an breathtaking expression of Vosne-Romanée's classic "iron fist in a velvet glove" archetype. The entry is silk incarnate, coating the mouth in a focused wave of juicy red fruits and pomegranate skin before being driven vertically by a vibrant, energetic spine of limestone-sharp acidity. The high-altitude, rocky positioning of 'Les Petits Monts' makes itself felt through a deeply tactile, chalky mid-palate texture and a persistent, fine-grained tannic network that structure the fruit beautifully.
