Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Gevrey-Chambertin 2021
Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Gevrey-Chambertin is a masterfully crafted, terroir-driven village Pinot Noir that beautifully balances the muscular power of Gevrey with the hallmark elegance, purity, and finesse of Amélie Berthaut's winemaking style. Amélie inherited exceptional parcels in this legendary appellation through the Gerbet side of her family, specifically from prized, old-vine sites situated in the lieux-dits of En Champs and Clos des Chezeaux—both of which sit directly adjacent to premier cru slopes. The vines are rooted in a classic matrix of deep Comblanchien limestone mixed with iron-rich clay marls. Amélie tends these vines with meticulous, sustainable care to encourage low yields and concentrated fruit. In the cellar, she treats the village fruit with Grand Cru-level reverence: utilizing a gentle, native-yeast fermentation with a judicious inclusion of whole bunches (often around 20-30%) for aromatic lift, followed by a patient 15 to 18-month maturation in French oak barrels, typically keeping new wood under 30% to prevent the timber from overshadowing the wine's vibrant soil character.
In the glass, it reveals a dense, yet translucent ruby-purple color with brilliant garnet glints at the rim. The nose is a striking, classic showcase of Gevrey-Chambertin, opening with an explosive, complex bouquet of dark wild blackberries, black cherries, and dark plums, seamlessly intertwined with signature savory undertones of damp forest floor, gamey cured meats, woodsmoke, and violets. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in structural harmony. It is medium-to-full-bodied, coating the mouth in a deep, savory wave of dark orchard fruit that feels athletic rather than heavy. This concentration is perfectly held together by an architectural network of chalky, broad-shouldered, yet incredibly fine-grained tannins and a vibrant line of natural limestone acidity. The mineral weight of the clay-limestone bedrock leaves a persistent, tactile, and graphite-like impression across the back palate.
