Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 2014

Regular price $1,479.00

Bonneau du Martray is one of the benchmarks of great white Burgundy, and the only estate in Burgundy to make wine exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards, just two wines, the white Corton-Charlemagne and a red Corton. The vineyard sits in a single block on the hill of Corton, at Pernand-Vergelesses, and its history stretches back to Charlemagne, who is said to have given vines here to the Abbey of Saint-Andoche in 775. The modern estate dates from 1835, when Charles Bonneau du Martray married Eugénie Very, whose dowry included the vineyards, and it passed in time to the Le Bault de la Morinière family. Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, who joined in 1994, moved the domaine to organic farming from 1997 and biodynamics from the mid-2000s, with certification in 2013. Clive Coates called the wine one of the very greatest in all Burgundy.

In 2017 the American vintner Stanley Kroenke, who also owns Screaming Eagle, acquired the estate, with the Le Bault de la Morinière family keeping a minority stake. In 2018, 2.8 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne were leased to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which means the domaine now farms about 6.7 hectares of Chardonnay, and Jean-Baptiste Boudier has directed the winemaking since 2018.
