Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs 2020

Few of Benjamin Leroux's wines carry a more personal story than this one. Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a tiny, entirely walled 0.64-hectare monopole belonging to the family of Jean-Charles Carré, Leroux's long-time right-hand man — land that's been in his family for generations and that he still farms himself, biodynamically, with what's often described as a father's precision and care. It's Volnay's highest-elevation Premier Cru, a mid-slope, southeast-facing site enclosed on every side by stone walls and the village's own houses, which help warm and protect the fine, light clay-limestone soil beneath. The vines run up to eighty years old, with an average around fifty, and include a portion of younger massale-selection vines sourced directly from Comte Armand's celebrated Clos des Epeneaux — a fitting nod to where Leroux himself began his career. The wine was barely known before Leroux started bottling it in 2007; today it's one of the true signature cuvées of his range. Winemaking varies subtly with the vintage — typically a portion of whole-cluster fruit, a fifteen-day maceration on ambient yeasts, and around twelve months' ageing split evenly between tank and barrel, keeping new oak to a minimum.

The result shifts year to year but consistently shows real pedigree: violets, boysenberry, and black pepper in some vintages, crushed stone and blackberry in others, always underpinned by a distinctly floral, elegant character that Leroux himself has noted the clos has leaned into more with recent, gentler-handed vintages. The palate ranges from silky and fine-tannined to richer and more fleshy depending on the year, but the through-line is real length, lively acidity, and a seductive, penetrating finish.
